PBL Meeting 21/9/17

PBL network meeting

Term 3 2017

Present - Silverdale, Glamorgan, Mairangi Bay, Willow Park, Forrest Hill, Dairy Flat, Northcote, Coatesville, Orewa, Torbay, Milford, Wainui and Stanmore Bay

Another great turnout, almost 60 people Wow!- Thank you everyone for being so passionate about PBL!

A huge thank you to Mairangi Bay for being wonderful hosts and being so willing to share.

Mairangi bay shared some great photos of PBL in action and explained how PBL looks like in their classes. They call it Discovery Time. Provocations were discussed - Teacher would find equipment / resources following an interest expressed the day before and often would find a lack of interest because ‘that was yesterday,’  Their PBL program is still evolving and they are trying to add something new to the program each term.
Students planning – just like teachers need to plan students also need to plan their work, letting them show off their planning has helped create motivation for doing this.

Year 2 classes will be starting PBL soon, need to look at equipment for Year 2 as need next level up of equipment, their amazing caretaker has built a lot of equipment for them which is rotated every 5 weeks between NE Year 1 classes
Main aspect coming out of PBL is the social skills. The kids love it, favourite time of day.

We then had time to look at numerous classrooms (it is always inspiring to see how other schools set up their rooms and what equipment they have)

Using Seesaw

Seesaw
This week we started using Seesaw in Room 9

What a cool way to communicate with parents! I am managing to post to families most days whether it is reading groups or a photo of some cool work and the families are really responding! I much prefer this as a way to quickly share learning with parents it is much easier then a blog. This image is after the first week - I can't wait to see how much better it is next week!

Amy -
Wow, what a week! Here’s your weekly Seesaw summary for Room 9 Torbay School.

Maths Observation

Observation in Nikki's class - place value
Similar to what I am teaching - refined questioning and resources
Make - number cards to 100 so they can be given a number on a square rather then two cards.

After seeing this I am reassured about how I am teaching I just need to...
Rethink planning - more space to move students around in groups rather then being stuck in groups.
Highlight the students I am working with so everyone is covered
more independent games that are worthwhile
